On the 27th of May at 5 pm, folk musicians Krista Citra Joonas and Jaak Johanson will be performing at Tallinn’s Vanalinna Muusikamaja (Uus 16c), accompanied by storyteller Joonas Koff.
Jaak Johanson has been the leader of the folk-life movement in Tallinn for years and has organised musical gatherings at Vanalinna Muusikamaja and Kloostri Ait. In addition to this, he is a valued songwriter in the “Johanson ja vennad” band (Johanson and brothers). Krista Citra Joonas is a saxophonist and flute player, who has added to her skills in India and Switzerland. She also plays the Indian bamboo-flute, also known as the bansuri.
Krista and Jaak will perform a number of tunes from home and all over the world.
The concert will open with an introduction from a student of Vanalinna Hariduskolleegium, Joonas Koff. “He is not short of words, he is a voice from the crowd – a poet and a storyteller” as he is described by Jaak Johanson.
The concert will end with a film- and photoprogramme of the first Reval Folk season. As this is the last indoor concert of the season, will will also party. All who are interested are invited to play and sing along with their own instruments after the concert finishes. Let’s greet the summer together!
With this concert Reval Folk also celebrates Estonia’s 100th birthday. This will be the 7th Reval Folk concert this season.

Reval Folk

Jaak Johanson graduated from the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and has been a Tallinn City Theatre actor in the past. He has collected and performed folk songs with his band “Leegajus” and has taken part in the Merle Karusoos project “Pirgu Arenduskeskuse mälusektor”. He sang with the Conservatory’s jazz quartet and has performed as the soloist of Heino Markus´s big band (the forerunner of the Estonian Dream Big Band) at the first few Tudengijazz (Student Jazz) festivals. He has also performed the creation of Raimond Valgre with Sulev Luik.
Jaak has always had a family band, named “Johanson and Brothers” and has performed with the band called “Eesti keeled” (Estonian strings) since 2009.
He has initiated a folklore program with Mikk Sarv at VHK Muusikamaja and he was the one who started the folk life of Kloostri Ait and the Folk Dance Club in the 1990s.

KRISTA CITRA JOONAS started her music-studies as a saxophonist. She has graduated from the music school of Heino Eller in Tartu, the music school of Georg Ots in Tallinn, the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, and Musikhochschule in Zürich, Zwitzerland.
Now, she is most known as an Indian bamboo-flute (bansuri) player. She has been learning the instrument, which is quite rare here in Estonia, for over 15 years. She studied the instrument from legendary bansuri player Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia and has given concerts in both India and Europe.
In 2014 she released her first solo-album “Sundari”, which contains mostly her own work. Additionally, one can hear Krista play bansuri on over twenty albums; she has played with numerous extraordinary Estonian musicians, such as Siiri Sisask, Sven Grünberg, Tõnis Mägi, Meelis Vind, Johansonid, Riho Sibul, Jaak Tuksam, Ain Agan, Mart Soo, and more. She also teaches saxophone and bansuri at VHK Muusikakool.
On last sunday of May, the 27th, Jaak plans to play his a set entitled “Ownsongs”, from which at least two will be world premieres. Krista will play everlasting tunes on her flute, accompanied by some saxophone.
“Ownsongs” is a collage of thoughts and mind sets about what is going on right now – all the way into eternity. Similar to poetry, with or without guitar. “We will drift into some traditional Estonian regilaul, so that our hearts can sing together,” Jaak promises.

REVAL FOLK
Reval Folk is a civic initiative that began in cooperation with NGO Reval Folk and the folk music department of the Tallinn-based Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre.
Our aim is to offer people in busy Tallinn the chance to reconnect with their roots through regular folk music concerts (that offer both traditional music and music inspired by traditional music) and workshops. Our second biggest aim is to inspire young people to study folk music on a professional level in the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre.
In the summer of 2018 we plan to organise an international folk music camp named “Reval Ethno” for children who are 8-16 years of age. Our aim is to eventually have a regular presence of folk music in the Tallinn music scene.
