MARTIN MÜLLER AND VILLU TALSI:
Villu Talsi and Martin Müller started collaborating during their folk music studies in the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. Often in folk music people and space are intertwined. Their repertuoire as a duo is inspired by the work of the legendary squeezebox master of Virumaa, Miila village (Estonia) – Sepa Julius (1901-1981). Martin lives in Milla village, and Villu’s ancestors were closely connected with Sepa Julius.

„Because we come from Virumaa, we wanted to do something related to our home region. I knew the instrument master had lived there, and there are many memories about him,“ says Müller. In addition there are old tapes in archives where we found tunes that had once been very popular, such as „The Drifters Valss,“ and many other tunes that were unknown. Who knows, those tunes might be his own.“
In 2016 Villu Talsi and Martin Müller released a CD including the best tunes of the instrument master: Martin Müller and Villu Talsi, hunting with Sepa Julius. In the same year they were given the „Joy of Life“ award in their local county – Lääne-Virumaa. In 2017 they were awarded the most prestigious folk music prize in Estonia „Etnokulp“ in two categories.

REVAL FOLK:
We are a civic initiative that began in cooperation with NGO Reval Folk and the folk music department of the Tallinn-based Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. Our aim is to help people connect with their roots in busy-minded Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. Our second aim is to inspire young people to study folk music on a professional level in the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. We believe that music is everyone´s birthright. Getting to know traditional music from around the world helps people find their authentic selves. This unfortunately has become a rarity in our business and technology oriented world.
